The Mews House, Kensington, London
The owners of this large Mews House asked us to create a new basement living area, maximising the levels of natural daylight to the lower ground floor. Due to the lack of windows on the rear elevation, we sought to increase natural daylight by including a new light well and by adding an open staircase to the core of the building.
A feature staircase wraps itself up through the building, connecting every floor of the building with a bespoke piece of integrated furniture. Seating spaces, unusual apertures and hidden storage encourage the notion of creating internal living spaces that are all strongly connected to one another throughout the house.
As the property sits within a conservation area, the planning process was complex and led to months of negotiations with the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. The new basement spaces house a kitchen and dining room that gathers its light from above via internal lightwells and double height space.
A four storey oak staircase wraps it way up the building providing a much needed internal lightwell. The floors are landing spaces off the staircase with its twisting motion climbing up through the building.
